If there is one thing that the Hunter Valley is known for, it is the range of wines that are produced there. But not only are there several prize winning drops waiting for you to sample them, there are plenty of other things to do and see as well. To make your stay truly memorable, there are plenty of Hunter Valley resorts that offer special packages to visitors to the region.

The Hunter Valley is located a mere 120 kilometres north of Sydney and only around 50 kilometres from Newcastle, making it easily accessible from anywhere in Australia by air. For wine lovers and culinary gourmands, there are many delights to be discovered and with the beautiful landscape and surrounds, it is no surprise that this is one of Australia's premier tourist destinations.

There are many vineyards clustered around the region growing and producing prizewinnng shiraz, chardonnay, semillon, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir. By joining a winery tour throughout the region or making cellar door tasting stops, you can sample some of the best vino produced in the country. Some of the wineries that offer cellar door tasting include: Oakvale, Peacock Hill, Pepper Tree, Peterson's and Poole's Rock.

Many of these local wineries also have onsite restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy some of the best locally produced fare. Drayton Wines, which is more than 150 years old, has a range of local products such as dukkah, tapenade and oils as well as serving up an amazing Devonshire tea. At the Tallavera Grove there is a new restaurant that makes use of fresh local ingredients, many of them organic.

You can learn how to make best use of some of these wonderful local ingredients in your own kitchen by attending one of the cooking schools here. Some of them work exclusively with organic foods and you can choose between several courses of differing lengths.

If you enjoy being at one with nature or bush walking, then there are plenty of opportunities awaiting you here with many different national parks such as Mount Royal National Park, Goulburn River National Park, Myall Lakes National Park, Barrington Tops National Park and Werakata National Park. The area even boasts a World Heritage Site with Barrington Tops forming part of the Gondwana Rain Forests of Australia.

You can also tee off at several world class golf courses scattered throughout the Hunter Valley. There are private and group classes that you can sign on for in order to improve your swing and cut down that handicap before you venture round the links. If all of that seems like too much hard work, then you may like to visit one of the areas acclaimed day spas where you will receive rejuvenating and revitalising treatments.
